The process

Do you know? Major toothpaste or tooth powder contains limestone, or calcium carbonate (CaCO3), which comprises more than 4% of the earth’s crust and is found throughout the world. Its most common natural forms are chalk, limestone, and marble, produced by the sedimentation of the shells of small fossilized snails, shellfish, and coral over millions of years. Although all three forms are identical in chemical terms, they differ in many other respects, including purity, whiteness, thickness and homogeneity.

Calcium carbonate is one of the most useful and versatile materials known to man. Limestone is a sedimentary rock composed largely of the mineral calcite. Pure limestone is almost white. Because of impurities, such as clay, sand, organic remains, iron oxide and other materials, many limestone specimens exhibit different colors, especially on weathered surfaces. Limestone may be crystalline, caustic, granular, or massive, depending on the method of formation. Crystals of calcite, quartz, dolomite or baryte may line small cavities in the rock.

Extraction of calcium carbonate

Calcium carbonate, as it is used for industrial purposes, is extracted by mining or quarrying. Pure calcium carbonate can be produced from marble, or it can be prepared by passing carbon dioxide into a solution of calcium hydroxide. In the later case, calcium carbonate is derived from the mixture created in Alphie 3D Mixer, forming a grade of product called “precipitated calcium carbonate,” or PCC. PCC has a very fine and controlled particle size but Alphie Three Dimensional Mixer has been proven for blending or mixing multiple fine powders having particle sizes ranging from 0.1µm to 300µm, on the order of 2 microns in diameter, particularly useful in production of paper. The other primary type of industrial product is “ground calcium carbonate,” or GCC. GCC, as the name implies, involves crushing and processing limestone to create a powdery-like form graded by size and other properties for many different industrial and pharmaceutical applications.

Know what are the applications of limestone (calcium carbonate)

Toothpaste & Tooth powder– This common abrasive helps remove plaque, debris and surface stains. Abrasives, combined with the scrubbing motion of your toothbrush, clean the surface of your tooth. They’re the reason your teeth feel so smooth and clean after brushing. They can also help make your smile whiter!

Cement and mortar – Lime mortar today is primarily used in the conservation of buildings originally built using lime mortar, but may also be used as an alternative to ordinary portland cement. It is made principally of lime (hydraulic or non hydraulic), water and an aggregate such as sand. Portland cement is incompatible with lime mortar because it is harder, less flexible, and impermeable.

Pulverized limestone is used as a soil conditioner to neutralize acidic soil conditions and crushed for use as aggregate – the solid base for many roads. Geological formations of limestone are among the best petroleum reservoirs. Pulverized limestone is also used as a reagent in desulphurization, glass making, added to paper, plastics, paint, tiles and other materials as both white pigment and cheap filler. It is also used in the suppression of methane explosions in underground coal mines, added to bread and cereals as a source of calcium, chemical feedstock for production of lime, cattle feed industries, PVC pipe and cable compounding industries.

Limestone can be the best filler mixer for applications like rubber, paints, ceramic industries, plastic, soap & detergents, mosaic tiles, paper mill, welding, electrode, fertilizer & other industries, manufacture of quicklime (calcium oxide) and slaked lime (calcium hydroxide).

If you are looking for a homogeneous mixing solution for very fine powders, consider the Alphie Mixer, which is far better than conventional mixers. Kinematic 3D mixing principle gives homogeneous mixing in the shortest span of time. We offer three dimensional multi motion mixers having various capacity ranges from 3 L (lab capacity) to 1500 L (production capacity).
